| One in three children are affected by poverty. One in four families cannot afford basic goods and activities. Support for families is likely to remain limited, so many future parents will continue to experience economic insecurity. More people are renting rather than buying their home; single-parent families often live in temporary accommodation. Are child arrangements still suitable when suitable housing is not available? The number of cases of domestic abuse is high among families involved in the family justice system. Women are more likely to experience repeated and harmful abuse. Although alcohol use among young people has declined significantly, cannabis dependence has increased. Anxiety and depression have increased: one in four young adults now experience a common mental health condition. Getting support is unequal, with those in more deprived areas facing greater challenges. Future parents may be more likely to experience untreated or long-term mental health difficulties. The combination of poverty, housing instability, domestic abuse, substance mis-use, and mental health issues are likely to increase both the number and complexity of cases. |
