As many of us are living much longer these days, unfortunately a marriage or partnership for life is no longer a certainty.
Sometimes we just fall out of love or meet another partner after many years of marriage rather than one party being at fault. For instance, unreasonable behaviour, desertion, domestic violence or substance abuse.
So its about time that the law caught up with real life. And from this Autumn of this year it will.
No fault divorce will bring divorce into the twenty first century. And those aren’t my words. That’s the view of the Law Society.
And it’s not before time – people have been campaigning for this for the last thirty years!
For the 100,000 couples who divorce each year, the new law can’t come into force a day too soon.
