There are 28.6 million households: 67% contain one family and 30% are a single person living alone.
More people live alone than ten years ago and a larger proportion of them were aged 65 years or over.
One third of men aged between 20 and 34 years live with their parent(s) compared with less than a quarter of women.
Married couples – with and without children – made up the largest proportion of families (65%), but this was down slightly on a decade ago because more couples are cohabiting rather than marrying.
Lone parent families were less likely to contain dependent children than a decade ago as more lone parent families now contain only adult children.
The number of lone parents who are lone fathers is up slightly from ten years ago.
