When a couple get divorced many assume that the conditional order (the old decree absolute) ends all connections with their former husband or wife.

It does not.

If you haven’t severed your financial links with a Financial Consent Order then your ex can come after you.

Forever.

For any future inheritance or income (for example the sale of a company.)

Yet only half of divorcing couples get a Financial Consent Order.

Dale Vince, the founder of the green energy firm Ecotricity, and his wife Kathleen divorced. 19 years later she was allowed to bring a claim against him. Since their split, Dale had become a multi-millionaire and Kathleen was awarded £300,000.

A Financial Consent Order would have protected Dale’s future income from a claim.
